China kommt in der deutschen Politik immer schlechter weg. In den 1970er-Jahren gab es dagegen noch einen Wettstreit, welcher Politiker und Wahlkämpfer von Mao empfangen wurde – und wie lang die Gespräche dauerten. Der Gang nach China galt damals als Zeichen außenpolitischer Relevanz. Diese Zeit wirkt heute sehr fern – zumal sie manch kuriose Anekdote hervorgebracht hat, die heute undenkbar wäre.
