Factions reach agreement on ETS and border adjustment

Less than a week after the package failed in plenary, EPP, S D, and Renew have agreed on a compromise. With the introduction of border adjustment, the allocation of free allowances is now to be reduced from 2027 and completed by the end of 2032.

Ukraine's EU accession: a conditional yes

Scholz, Macron, and Draghi will likely travel together to Kyiv today – sending a strong symbol of solidarity with Ukraine. They could bring President Zelenskiy a perspective for his country's EU accession, albeit conditionally. Macron is also promoting his model of a European Political Community.

EU needs to share the costs of energy independence

Two of the probably most pressing and important goals currently pursued by the EU are closely linked: To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the EU needs to massively promote the expansion of renewable energies. At the same time, this also factors into achieving complete independence from Russian energy supplies. However, both goals can only be reached if the EU pursues a plan for joint financing and does not leave the countries to fend for themselves.
