Taiwan features huge in China

Our "View from China" comes from authors from the People's Republic. This first installment is about the view of Chinese citizens on the Taiwan issue. In China, people grow up with different ideas about the status of the island than their contemporaries in Western countries. Taiwan is regarded as part of the People's Republic as a matter of course, and any other view is rejected. Moreover, this issue is highly charged emotionally.

Instead, patriotic Chinese productions are climbing the box office. The Chinese and global cinema markets are drifting further and further apart – a missed financial opportunity for both sides.

Growth of foreign companies severely impaired

Foreign enterprises in China are re-assessing their China strategy in face of both stringent covid policies and decoupling trends. The statistics on their business performance, as given by the National Bureau of Statistics, underline that they have reasons to be worried. Foreign companies in China have recorded low revenue growth in 2022 year-to-date compared to the same period last year. Further, their operating profitability decreased from the high point in 2021.​
